  • New App Helps Bonairian Farmers Grow Smarter

Bonairian farmers are about to get a powerful tool right in their pocket. The Phito App—designed specifically for small-scale farmers and livestock owners—is being developed with two big goals in mind: better support and stronger connections.

A first test version is already in the hands of local farmers. Their feedback is now driving improvements to make sure the app truly meets their needs. The final version is expected to launch this summer.

Built with farmers, not just for them

Phito is an international collaboration between Bonaire, Aruba, Spain, and Portugal, with Bonaire’s Department of Agriculture (LVV) leading the local effort. From day one, farmers have played a central role in shaping the app.

At a stakeholder session in October 2024, they shared their needs and priorities. One popular request? A notification system that alerts them when rain is on the way—crucial for planning daily work in an unpredictable climate.

Two key features. Simple and smart

The Phito App will offer:

  • Custom guidance: Easy-to-follow tips and updates for sustainable farming and livestock care, tailored to Bonaire’s unique conditions.
  • Smart networking: Tools that help farmers connect with each other and with local buyers like restaurants and supermarkets, improving coordination and reducing waste.

One farmer put it best during the test session:
Sometimes you’ve got more crops than you can sell, or not enough hands to help. If we can share those needs, we all benefit.”

Feedback from the field

In February, farmers tested the early app version during small group sessions and one-on-one meetings. They downloaded the app on their phones, explored its features, and shared what worked—and what didn’t.

Their input was honest and practical. Some features needed to be clearer, others more user-friendly. The development team is now making those changes.
