  • New App Helps Bonaire Farmers Connect, Share, and Thrive

On July 8, Bonaire’s farmers, supermarket managers, and restaurant owners came together for a special information session hosted by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV). The session offered a first look at the Phito App—a new digital tool designed to bring farmers closer to each other and to the local market.

The app is part of the European Phito Project, launched in 2023 by Cambisol and Wageningen University, and funded by the European Commission. Bonaire is working alongside Aruba, Spain, Italy, and Portugal to build a tool that supports food producers with knowledge, connection, and opportunity.

A local marketplace at your fingertips

The Phito App is now being tested on Bonaire. It includes a digital marketplace for fresh local goods, a messaging feature to connect directly with buyers, and a library of practical farming tips and advice.

In 2024, local farmers were asked what they needed most to grow their business. Their feedback helped shape the app’s first version, which is now in its testing phase. During the session, participants got a live demo and shared ideas for improvement—making sure the app truly fits the island’s needs.

Looking ahead

The full launch of the Phito App is scheduled for 2026. Until then, the project team will keep refining it with input from the local farming community. The early feedback is promising.

“An app that helps me sell directly and gives me advice? That’s something I can actually use,” said one of the farmers at the session.
