This week, Dutch environmental company Afvalzorg began working at Bonaire’s main landfill site, Lagun. Their goal: put an end to underground fires and help improve the way waste is handled on the island. The project is commissioned by the Public Entity of Bonaire (OLB).
During their first inspection, Afvalzorg and local waste company Selibon identified around 15 smoldering fires burning beneath the surface at Lagun. While not large, these fires pose serious risks to human health and the environment through toxic fumes, heat, and air pollution.
Afvalzorg is now developing a step-by-step action plan. The plan will outline how to safely extinguish the fires and lay out practical improvements for how the landfill is managed moving forward. It also includes close coordination with the fire department, local health authorities, and nearby residents.
A public information meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jong Bonaire. Residents will have the opportunity to learn more about the plan and share questions, feedback, or concerns. Representatives from OLB, Afvalzorg, and Selibon will all be present.
To guide this process, Afvalzorg has also brought in an experienced landfill manager to advise Selibon and the government. This expert will help streamline waste operations, reduce health risks, and support long-term improvements in how trash is sorted and stored.
This initiative is part of a larger plan. With Afvalzorg’s support, Bonaire aims to manage not only Lagun but also the Morotin site more sustainably. The long-term partnership ensures the island can rely on international expertise to build safer, cleaner waste systems.
OLB is taking clear responsibility for past problems and is committed to real progress. “We want to protect people’s health and the natural environment. That means taking action. Starting now.”
