Concerned residents showed up in strong numbers to the first Town Hall Meeting about the Lagun landfill site. They shared personal stories, raised tough questions, and offered ideas. The result: a constructive, transparent dialogue between citizens, public health experts, and local government.
The meeting took place on the evening of May 2nd and focused on the serious environmental and health concerns surrounding the Lagun landfill. Many people living nearby have long reported issues with smoke, odor, and potential risks to their children’s health. Officials acknowledged these concerns and opened the floor to honest, two-way conversation.
Experts from the Sustainable Waste Management Program (DAB) and the Public Health Department (GGD) gave updates on planned improvements and shared early findings from ongoing health and environmental research. Residents engaged actively, asking sharp questions and suggesting practical solutions.
This event marked the start of a broader series of community meetings on waste management. The goal: to work together toward a cleaner, safer, and healthier Bonaire. The Island Government reaffirmed its commitment to making real changes at the Lagun site, in close collaboration with Selibon, the Dutch central government, and most importantly—the people of Bonaire.
