The Island Government of Bonaire is taking major steps to reduce waste and keep the island clean and healthy for everyone. A new waste strategy is underway to improve how waste is collected, processed, and reused — all part of Bonaire’s commitment to sustainability and protecting its natural beauty.
Bonaire faces a growing waste problem. More residents, more tourists, and more imported goods all lead to more trash. Much of it still ends up in landfills, and litter is becoming a more visible issue across neighborhoods and nature areas. It’s time for change.
To tackle the problem, Bonaire has commissioned a new waste management vision. The plan, developed by global engineering firm Royal HaskoningDHV, will outline how the island can reduce landfill waste, recycle more, and manage waste more efficiently. It is expected to be finalized in early 2026.
New Waste Facility Under Consideration
In addition to the waste strategy, the government is also exploring new locations for waste processing. One potential site is near the western coast, close to the harbor and BOPEC. The location would be more accessible, keep heavy waste operations away from residential areas, and improve waste logistics across the island.
Benefits for People and Planet
With this new approach, Bonaire aims to:
- Cut down on landfill use
- Recycle and reuse more materials
- Reduce pollution and health risks
- Create new opportunities, like generating energy from waste
Everyone Has a Role to Play
These efforts mark an important step toward a circular economy, where materials are reused instead of wasted. But Bonaire’s government can’t do it alone. Residents, businesses, and visitors all have a part to play in keeping our island clean and thriving. Together, we’re building a better future — one where nature and community go hand in hand.
