  • Every Auto Shop on Bonaire Fails Environmental Inspection

A recent round of inspections has revealed that none of Bonaire’s 47 auto repair shops are complying with environmental safety regulations. In March 2025, the Directorate of Supervision and Enforcement (DTH), in collaboration with the Netherlands Environmental Protection Agency (ODNL), conducted on-site checks as part of the “Garagebedrijven 2025” project. The results are alarming.

Major environmental and safety violations

In total, 202 violations were documented. The majority concern poor protection of soil and improper storage of hazardous substances. For example:

  • 32 shops lacked spill containment trays
  • 11 operated without any soil protection measures
  • 21 had no absorbent materials for oil leaks
  • Many lacked proper oil-water separation systems

In addition, fire safety is often neglected. Multiple garages stored gas cylinders improperly or lacked certified fire extinguishers. Ventilation issues in paint booths and poor handling of refrigerants were also noted.

Not a single shop in full compliance

One of the most striking outcomes: not a single garage passed without violations. In fact, 44 shops failed to register with the local government, even though notification is required by law. “This is a serious environmental risk,” says DTH. “Leaking oils and chemicals can damage soil and groundwater, and endanger public health.”

Eight weeks to comply – or face penalties

All violations have been documented in official warnings. Shops now have eight weeks to take corrective action. After that, a follow-up inspection will determine whether improvements have been made. If not, enforcement will escalate. Companies may face daily fines, which will not lift the obligation to comply.

Information session planned for local garages

DTH will soon host an information session for all garage owners to explain the findings, review the regulations, and offer practical guidance on how to meet environmental and safety standards. The agency emphasizes that enforcement is not the goal. Supporting safe, sustainable practices is.

Urgent call to action

DTH urges all auto shops to act now. Protecting Bonaire’s environment—and the health of its people—requires full industry participation. Questions or concerns? Businesses are encouraged to contact DTH directly for guidance.
