  • Bonaire Takes Action: 28,000 Kilos of Trash Collected in One Day

On Saturday, August 17, hundreds of volunteers rolled up their sleeves for the very first Clean Up Day ‘Boneiru: Limpi i Bunita’, and the results were powerful. Together, they removed over 28,000 kilos (more than 61,000 pounds) of waste from streets, beaches and nature areas across the island.

From plastic bottles and broken furniture to old refrigerators, the collected trash was a harsh reminder of how much litter still ends up in our environment. Bonaire’s Commissioner Nina den Heyer, who joined the cleanup effort herself, shared a message of both pride and concern.

I’m incredibly proud of everyone who showed up to take care of our island,” she said. “But seeing this much trash also shows we have a long way to go. We need to keep raising awareness and take better care of our environment.”

The event was part of the Boneiru Limpi i Bunita campaign, focused on keeping Bonaire clean and beautiful with the help of the community. Organizers are already planning a second island-wide cleanup later this year.
