  • Bonaire ships out seven more containers of medical waste

Bonaire is taking the next big step in safely removing old medical waste from the island. In early July, a second phase of clean-up began: seven new shipping containers filled with biomedical waste are now being transported to Europe. The first batch is already on the way. The rest will follow in the coming weeks.

This continues the work that started back in April, when five containers were removed in the first round. For years, this waste sat unused and unmanaged. Now, it’s finally being handled the right way.

A local team, fully prepared

Before anything moved, teams on the ground made sure everything was ready. New leak-proof barrels were delivered from the Netherlands, and a trusted local contractor took the lead in repackaging the waste for transport. Every step followed strict safety rules.

Selibon confirms that the project is running on schedule, and all containers are being sealed and shipped in multiple rounds.

Why this matters: health and environment

Medical waste—like used syringes, bandages, and contaminated materials—can pose real risks if not handled properly. That’s why there are strict international rules for storing and removing it. Bonaire is following those rules closely.

Everyone involved—RMD, Selibon, and Fundashon Mariadal—completed special training to make sure the process is safe, clean, and responsible.

Final stop: safe destruction

Once the containers reach Europe, the waste will be incinerated in Belgium by a certified facility. This means no long-term storage, no dumping, and no risk to the community.

By shipping this waste off-island, Bonaire is protecting public health and helping preserve the island’s natural environment.

Island leadership is staying on it

The Executive Council calls this a vital step. “We’re proud to see the second phase underway. This is about protecting our people and our home. We’ll keep monitoring the process closely with all our partners.”
