  • Bonaire Launches New Fisheries Monitoring Project: Local Fishers Invited to Share Knowledge

The Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) of the public entity Bonaire has launched a new initiative to gain a better understanding of local fishing practices and fish populations in the waters around the island. The goal is to support sustainable fisheries management and ensure that fishing remains viable for future generations.

Why the project matters

Fishing is an essential part of life on Bonaire. Culturally, economically, and socially. But in order to protect our marine resources, we need reliable data. That’s why LVV is asking local fishers to voluntarily share their knowledge and catch information.

The collected data will help paint a clearer picture of what’s happening at sea and provide the foundation for long-term policies that benefit both the fishing community and marine biodiversity.

What LVV needs from fishers

LVV is inviting all local fishers to participate by sharing basic information such as:

  • How many hours you spend fishing
  • What types and how many fish you catch
  • The approximate size and weight of your catch
  • Where you fish (in general terms)
  • How you fish (methods and materials)
  • How many lines you use
  • Whether you operate as a charter

Even if you catch nothing, that’s valuable to report too

Data will remain anonymous

All information will be treated confidentially. Names, boat numbers, and personal details are not recorded. The data will be analyzed in the Netherlands, and a summary report will be shared with the fishing community every six months to keep everyone informed about trends and changes in local fisheries.

Join the effort

Fishers who have not yet been contacted but would like to contribute to this important project are encouraged to reach out to LVV by phone at +599 717 6734.

This project is about more than just numbers, it’s about working together to protect a way of life.
