Last week, officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) visited Bonaire to meet and discuss with Commissioner Cicilia about agriculture, food quality, and nature conservation. The purpose of the LNV visit was primarily to get acquainted and to discuss the status of various ongoing nature projects.
During the visit, various projects were highlighted, such as mangrove restoration, erosion control, seagrass restoration, coral restoration, nature recovery in Washington Park, and agricultural projects. These projects are crucial as the nature on Bonaire is threatened by challenges such as soil erosion, invasive species, water and soil pollution, and coastal development. Protecting nature is also vital to better withstand the impacts of extreme weather conditions due to climate changes.
The Directorate of Spatial Planning and Development is now working on a new nature plan for the period 2025-2029. The main goals of this new plan are to restore coral reefs, preserve and restore unique habitats and species, sustainably use of land and water for the local economy, and establish local conditions for lasting results of the nature policy.
"The collaboration with LNV helps us achieve our goals. In our government agreement for Bonaire, 'the difference, just and sustainable 2023-2027', nature protection is included as one of our main priorities. The nature plan, along with the future structural vision for Bonaire, will support us in executing our ambitions for our beautiful island," said Commissioner Cicilia.
