From May 19 to 23, 2025, Bonaire proudly welcomes delegates from across the Dutch Caribbean and the European Netherlands for the second DCALFA conference. A high-level gathering focused on food security and sustainable local production.
DCALFA, short for Dutch Caribbean Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Alliance, brings together all six Dutch Caribbean islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Eustatius, and St. Maarten) to strengthen regional cooperation in agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding in 2023, the alliance has taken concrete steps to boost local food production and reduce dependency on imports.
Why It Matters
For island communities that often rely heavily on imported goods, regional collaboration is critical to creating resilient food systems. Bonaire, as this year’s host, is leading by example. “This isn’t just about policy,” said Bonaire Commissioner Anjelica Cicilia. “It’s about people from across the islands coming together to build a shared future.”
What’s Happening This Week
The conference features a mix of strategic discussions and hands-on workshops. Highlights include:
- The launch of the official DCALFA website, which will serve as an information hub for stakeholders in the region.
- Practical sessions on sustainable fishing, the role of the private sector, and youth engagement in agriculture and food systems.
- A high-level policy panel where island leaders will shape a shared food security vision for the Dutch Caribbean. Participants include Commissioner Cicilia (Bonaire), Commissioner Rechelline Leerdam (St. Eustatius), and Minister Geoffrey Wever (Aruba).
Empowering the Next Generation
A key focus of this year’s event is the inclusion of young entrepreneurs from the agriculture and fisheries sectors. Supported by the Dutch Ministries of Economic Affairs and Agriculture, these youth leaders bring fresh energy and ideas to the table. Their participation is seen as vital to securing long-term change.
