  • Bonaire Tackles Smoldering Fires at Lagun Landfill

This week, the Public Entity of Bonaire (OLB) began targeted efforts to extinguish underground fires at the Lagun landfill site. These fires are remnants from the larger blazes that occurred in recent months and continue to smolder beneath the surface.

The operation starts near the residential area and will move gradually toward the main entrance. Work is scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily to limit disruption for nearby residents.

Fires located and safely managed

A recent inspection identified approximately 15 underground hot spots. These were mapped using infrared cameras and temperature sensors. The fires are now being carefully exposed, extinguished with water, and covered with diabase. A dense rock that cuts off oxygen and prevents reignition.

The goal is clear: bring the situation under control and ensure safety for both local residents and landfill workers.

Residents informed and heard

On June 24, a community meeting was held to explain the plan and timeline. Residents and stakeholders were invited to ask questions and share concerns. OLB will continue to keep the neighborhood informed as work progresses.

Beyond firefighting: long-term waste management

In addition to extinguishing the current fires, OLB is taking steps to improve long-term waste management. This includes safer handling and faster processing of high-risk materials like tires and plastics. The aim is to reduce the risk of future fires and create a cleaner, safer environment for everyone on the island.
