  • Bario Limpi Campaign Clears 145 Tons of Waste Across Three Weekends

Residents take action to clean up neighborhoods across Bonaire

The Bario Limpi campaign delivered strong, visible results this December. Over the course of three cleanup weekends, residents across Bonaire removed a total of 145 tons of waste from their neighborhoods. During the final round, held December 19–21, an additional 38 tons was collected.

The initiative, led by the Public Entity of Bonaire’s Supervision and Enforcement Department in partnership with Selibon NV, made it easier for residents to take part. Temporary waste containers were placed in neighborhoods, giving people a simple way to dispose of bulky items and other waste. The response was immediate. Streets and yards that had been cluttered or neglected are now noticeably cleaner. After each cleanup weekend, Selibon NV cleared and sanitized all container locations. Public spaces were left clean, safe, and ready for daily use.

Several neighborhoods stood out. Tera Kòrá collected 23 tons of waste. Nikiboko also made a major contribution, with a combined total of 27.4 tons across its North and South areas. “We see what happens when people come together,” said Sherman Blanken, Head of Enforcement Projects & Taskforces. “Residents take ownership. They care for their neighborhood. That’s what makes the difference.”

Bario Limpi was designed to support residents while raising awareness about the importance of a clean living environment. The turnout and results show that the commitment is there. A cleaner Bonaire starts at the neighborhood level and grows through shared action.
