Every year, we produce over 380 million tons of plastic worldwide. Half of this is for single-use, meaning it is thrown away after just one use! Since only 9% of all plastic is recycled, most ends up in our landfills. Or worse, as litter on our streets or in nature, polluting our oceans. To raise awareness about this pollution, we celebrate International Plastic-Free Day on May 25th.
Fortunately, in Bonaire, we have already taken steps to ban plastic. For two years, Bonaire has prohibited the sale of disposable carry bags, straws, stirrers, cutlery, and styrofoam meal containers. These measures have helped, but the problem of plastic litter persists.
"We still see a lot of plastic litter in neighborhoods, along roads, and on beaches. On the beaches, it involves both washed-up plastic and plastic originating from us that is increasing," says Commissioner Cicilia. "However, if we just look at the banned items such as straws, stirrers, and cutlery, there is a declining trend. This shows that our efforts are working and that we need to continue this approach."
Volunteer organizations regularly organize cleanup activities on our beaches. We can all contribute to a more beautiful and cleaner Bonaire. Join a cleanup, refuse single-use plastic, and opt for reusable products. Together, we can make a significant impact on preserving our beautiful nature. Let's join hands for a plastic-free and beautiful Bonaire.
