  • Underground Fires at Lagun Waste Center Successfully Extinguished

Seventeen underground fires at the Lagun Waste Center have been fully extinguished over the past few weeks. These fires were triggered by open burns that occurred at the landfill site earlier this year. Thanks to a strong partnership between Selibon and Afvalzorg Nederland, the situation is now under control.

While the fires are out, the risks haven't disappeared. Selibon staff will continue to monitor the site closely. Team members are now trained to respond quickly and effectively to any new signs of fire. Using infrared cameras, they can detect hotspots early. In addition, 24/7 security remains in place to help keep the area safe.

The response effort has also provided valuable insights. Selibon and the Public Entity of Bonaire are using this experience to improve how waste is received and processed at the site. Afvalzorg Nederland will keep supporting that work. The shared goal: a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future for Bonaire’s waste management.
