  • Firefighting Progress at Lagun Waste Center: Safe and Steady

Since June 26, the public waste company Selibon has been working closely with Dutch environmental specialists from Afvalzorg Nederland to extinguish underground fires at the Lagun Waste Center. The operation is part of a long-term effort to protect public safety and improve environmental management on the island.

Each Fire Pocket Handled With Care

Specialists began by identifying the exact locations of the underground fires. These spots are now being carefully opened. When smoke is detected, a large amount of water is used to extinguish and cool the area. This method prevents the fire from spreading and reduces future risks.

In some cases, small amounts of smoke may be visible during the process. This usually clears up quickly. If you do experience any smoke or odor in your area, you can contact the Public Entity of Bonaire at +599 777 2243.

Training Local Teams for the Future

Alongside the firefighting efforts, Afvalzorg is working with a dedicated group of Selibon employees. Knowledge and practical skills are being shared, so that local teams can manage similar incidents independently in the future.

Work Will Continue in the Coming Weeks

The joint effort between Selibon and Afvalzorg will continue in the weeks ahead. The goal is to ensure a safer, more sustainable waste center for the island and its residents.
